Recently in the art world, there has been a question about whether or not shoes are art. The answer is definitively yes!

Shoes are a delightful expression of style, taste, personality and investment. From the mid-1980s and beyond, “kicks” or sneakers have been elevated through sports and Hip Hop culture. With the rise in popularity and recognition of particular brands, sportswear also socially elevates the shoe-wearer. In other words, no matter what else you are wearing, if you have the right kicks on, you have status.

But this exhibition goes beyond celebrating sports shoes from the past half century, highlighting shoes representative of cultures around the world and across centuries.

Cowboy boots are an important part of Western culture and both vintage and contemporary boots are represented, highlighting one of Denver’s best-known companies: Rockmount Ranch Wear.

The well-known Colorado-based Crocs shoe company has multiple shoes featured in the exhibition, with not only their recognizable clogs, but also some of their more innovative designs. Luxury brands like Gucci, Louboutin and Prada are also on display.

Rounding out the shoes on display, we feature a small number of historic and antique shoes from other parts of the world. These range from Japanese bamboo sandals, to traditional Turkish slippers, to wooden footwear worn by Hindu priests in India.
