We think we know how the fairy tales go: Little Red Riding Hood. Cinderella. Rapunzel. Jack and the Beanstalk. Think again.

As a childless baker and his wife try to start a family, they discover a host of fairy tale characters seeking the fulfillment of their own wishes and dreams. Princes and princesses trying to find love; a witch trying to reclaim youth and beauty; and families trying to put food on the table. As they venture deeper into the woods, they discover the realities of life, as well as its consequences. This Sondheim classic reminds us that life is an unpredictable journey – “to mind, to heed, to find, to think, to teach, to join” – and that no one is alone.
