OPERA COLORADO PRESENTS SIDESHOW!
Tuesday, October 09, 2012

On November 1, 2 and 3, 2012, at 7:30 pm, Opera Colorado presents its second annual Sideshow!, a casual cabaret-style program initiated to showcase the lighter side of opera. Enjoy an entertaining evening of opera and song performed by the Opera Colorado Young Artists, cocktail in hand, at the contemporary theater space of the Studio Loft at the Ellie Caulkins Opera House.

This year’s program features American composer Douglas Moore’s 40-minute, one-act opera Gallantry. Composed in 1958, Gallantry is a spoof on the 1950’s hospital-themed soap opera complete with commercials strategically placed within the composition. The opera begins in a hospital hallway where eminent surgeon Doctor Gregg declares his love for anesthetist Lola Markham. Lola, although she admires Doctor Gregg as a physician, is already engaged to Donald Hopewell. When Doctor Gregg tries to kiss her, she slaps him. As they prepare for an operation, the Announcer interrupts with a commercial for Billy Boy Wax, "the waxy wax that spells relax."

In the operating room, Lola realizes that the patient is her fiancé, Donald. A chance remark by Donald reveals that Doctor Gregg is married. After she anesthetizes Donald, Lola confronts the doctor and threatens to expose him. She prevents him from stabbing the helpless Donald with his scalpel, and he chases her out. Donald awakes alone; as Lola returns and warns him about the doctor, the Announcer comes out with a closing commercial for Lochinvar; as Lola and Donald sing of their love for each other, Doctor Gregg and the Announcer extol the virtues of Lochinvar Soap and Billy Boy Wax.

The program concludes with a selection of cabaret songs by Grammy and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer William Bolcom and jazz standards and musical theater favorites by Cole Porter. To foster the cabaret setting, cocktails and light appetizers by Kevin Taylor’s at the Opera House will be available for purchase.

The performers are the 2012-2013 Opera Colorado Young Artists, a group of five talented, up-and-coming opera singers selected from across the country to participate in a seven-month residency with the company: soprano Morgan Harmison, mezzo-soprano Cassidy Smith, tenor Joshua Bouillon, baritone Alex DeSocio, and baritone Jared Guest. In addition to Sideshow!, the Young Artists will participate in school and community outreach programs, abridged touring productions of Bizet’s Carmen and Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, and the student matinee performance of Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet. More information on the Young Artists is available here.
