“Paremski performs with flawless technique and unbeatable energy.” - BBC Music Magazine

“All the ingredients of fine pianism are there, in the disciplined technique, the interesting program choices and the keyboard firepower that seemed to set all 88 keys afire... A warm ovation brought the young pianist back for several Chopin and Rachmaninoff encores, and the listeners-- charmed by her virtuosity and her lovely stage presence -- made their appreciation very clear.”  - Seattle Times

Cherish the Ladies: A Truly Irish Evening – CSO Pops

Scott O’Neil, associate conductor

Celebrate all things Irish with this spectacular group of artists. A blend of instrumental talents, beautiful vocals, captivating arrangements and stunning step dancing, Cherish the Ladies combines all the facets of Irish traditional culture into an immensely entertaining evening.

"Cherish the Ladies is one of the foremost Irish traditional music groups in the world." - The New York Daily News

"Expands the annals of Irish music in America...the music is passionate, tender and rambunctious." - The New York Times

"Superbly led by the larger than life Joanie Madden on whistles, flute, harmony vocals and introductions, these ladies dusted the perceived cobwebs off traditional music by presenting it in a new light, with a mixture of first class 'kick-ass' playing, sensational singing, dynamic dancing and infectious humor, that packaged it and sent it into the modern world - without ever losing respect for the musical roots." - The Belfast Telegraph, United Kingdom

MAR 20 (SAT 7:30)

Charlie Chaplin · A Dog’s Life and The Kid – CSO Goes to the Movies

Scott O’Neil, associate conductor

Two classic silent films for the price of one! The second concert in the CSO Goes to the Movies series features two Chaplin films with the musical score played in perfect synchronization by the CSO.  Join the Tramp and “Scraps,” Chaplin’s animal co-star in A Dog’s Life, as Scraps helps the Tramp and Edna toward a better life. The Kid is a heart-string-tugging story Chaplin himself dubbed “a story with a smile–perhaps, a tear.” The Kid was not only a turning point in Chaplin’s career; it was also an immensely personal film.

Charlie Chaplin’s influence on the evolution of the modern film was recognized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his body of work when they honored the filmmaker by awarding him a second Oscar in 1972 for "the incalculable effect he has had in making motion pictures the art form of this century."

MAR 21 (SUN 2:30*)

Haleakala: How Maui Snared the Sun – CSO Family Series

Scott O’Neil, associate conductor | David Rutherford, narrator

JOHN WILLIAMS                  Main Theme from Star Wars

DAN WELCHER                    Haleakala: How Maui Snared the Sun

GRIEG                                 Suite No. 1 from Peer Gynt

Journey to Hawaii with the CSO in a performance of Haleakala: How Maui Snared the Sun, composed by Dan Welcher. This music uses ancient Hawaiian chant-tunes and authentic instruments. The narration tells the story of Maui, known as ‘the trickster’ in Polynesian lore. This is the CSO premiere performance of this piece by Dan Welcher.

*Pre-concert activities at 1:00 (Including Hawaiian Hula Hips)

“Welcher is a terrific orchestrator. The indigenous fable of how Maui snared the sun and thus caused the seasons to occur is a colorful tale, eliciting brilliant, cinemascopic scoring from the composer (incorporating the use of traditional Hawaiian instruments). His depiction of the angry sun spitting fire is hugely exciting…” – Fanfare Magazine
